BYD is all set to showcase its all-electric K-Car, which is scheduled to make its debut at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show 2025. This car is expected to be launched in early 2026.
In a surprising move, BYD has announced its plans to introduce its first-ever electric Kei Car in Japan. The automobile company is normally known for its premium offerings and technology mastery. This will make history as a foreign company built an electric kei car in Japan. This model is expected to be sold primarily in the Japanese market only, yet no confirmation whether this will be sold in China.

From the side profile teaser, the vehicle reveals a box-shaped design, which is common among Japanese “kei car” models. It has a shorter front, a tall, boxy shape, and is focused on optimizing car interior space. From the side, the car has Square windows, circular wheel arches, and a flat beltline.

BYD’s small kei car has low ground clearance and very short front and rear ends. The wheels are placed at the corners, which helps create more space inside the cabin. Above the rear fender, there’s a visible line that shows where the sliding door rail is fitted. These sliding doors make it easy for passengers to get in and out and are also handy when loading large bags or luggage. Other small cars like the Suzuki Spacia and Honda N-Box also come with sliding rear doors.
At the back, the BYD kei car gets a flat rear windshield with a top-mounted wiper. Like most kei cars, it also features a wide-opening boot door, making it easy to access the luggage area. When the rear seats are folded, there’s enough room to carry various items and equipment.

As seen in earlier spy images, BYD’s new small car will come with sliding rear doors for easier entry and exit. The door design also ensures that the rear wheels do not interfere with their movement. The car gets large windows for better visibility and a stylish floating roof design. Both the front and back feature ring-shaped LED lights that give it a modern look.
BYD Kei Performance & Specs
Official details aren’t out yet, but the Japan version of BYD’s kei car is expected to get a 20 kWh battery pack, offering a range of about 180 km (WLTC standard). It could also support fast charging of up to 100 kW. A heat pump system may be included to keep the cabin comfortable while saving energy. More information will likely be shared at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show.

Because of its light build, the car can deliver that 180 km range using BYD’s 20 kWh Blade Battery. Under the CLTC standard, this range should be enough for daily city driving.
BYD is expected to launch this car in Japan at a competitive starting price of around 2.5 million yen (about ₹14.4 lakh). This makes it more affordable than models like the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK X EV. It will be interesting to see how BYD’s new car performs in a market largely led by local brands such as Suzuki, Honda, and Daihatsu.

According to BYD Auto Japan, this kei car concept is the company’s first model designed exclusively for overseas markets while meeting Japan’s compact car rules. It reflects BYD’s vision of “reducing Earth’s temperature by 1°C” and highlights the brand’s latest progress in battery technology and production.
